“Recolecciones” is a photography typology series of straws found in Panajachel, Atitlan, Guatemala. The series was a commission where I was an invited artist to be part of a collective exhibition “Los Amigos del Lago”. I was called to do a series that communicated the topic of contamination in Lake Atitlan. I spend a weekend exploring the lake and getting to know the main contamination issues going on, way too many to be captured in a single series.
The series is 15 minutes in the beach of Panajachel, I was able to capture 20 images of straws which demonstrates the magnitude of straws that are found here. It is important that an issue as simple as thrown straws is fixed in order to save the lake from contamination. The local communities need to be educated and clean up systems reinforced.
